Eva drove the Alfa Romeo, keeping the speed low and unobtrusive until they reached the edge of Shoebury town. When they were clear, Eva’s eyes flicked to the rearview mirror and locked onto Jess.

“Alright,” Eva began, her voice shaky but determined. “We found a few things. One of those files back there shows Mason Dolby’s debts. I’ve seen it. Dolby’s in deep. I don’t think Simone has any idea.”

Jess searched for the file, flipped the pages and held it high.

“Five hundred k. It was a hell of a lot more at the start,” said Jess.

“Yes. Now look at those payment dates,” said Eva. “They knocked off twenty k this morning. Why do you think they did that?”

“Because of the robbery,” said Dan. “Because he blocked that bus.”

“Exactly,” said Eva. “I bet if we checked the other markdowns on his debts, there’s every chance that they match some other local crimes. That’s why Mason keeps disappearing from home. It’s not just about meeting with Mandy Reid. He works at James’s beck and call, backing up his other criminal interests.”

“I don’t get it. This James guy is rich already. What does he need with robbing betting shops?” asked Jess.

Dan thought about the scrapbook in his pocket. “Some people will never have enough money or enough power. It’s just the way they are.”

Jess nodded in agreement. She patted the files. “This is good stuff, here. It could help you nail James.”

Dan nodded, his mind already chewing over the arson attacks and James’s potential involvement. He needed to speak to Alice. For now, he kept his suspicions quiet.

“Let’s not forget Mandy Reid’s role in all of this,” Eva added. “She’s not a bit part player here.”

“She definitely not a bit player,” said Dan. “James keeps a naked photograph of the woman in his drawer. They’re close as can be.”

Jess shook her head. “Gross.”

“Then she could be as involved in this as James is. She’s dangerous.”

“Yeah, dangerous is relative,” said Jess, as she quietly turned her eyes to the streets beyond the car window.

“They’re all villains,” said Dan, “Mason included. But I think there’s more to James than just being a greedy loan shark.”

Eva and Jess exchanged a look in the mirror. “Why? What are you thinking?” asked Eva, cautiously.

“Nothing concrete. Nothing yet,” Dan replied. “I just need to look into something.”

“Okay…” said Eva, discerning that Dan was holding something back. “But let’s focus on what we have in front of us, shall we? We need to build a solid case against James and expose Mandy Reid’s role in all of this.”

As they drove away from the Landy Lane estate, Dan couldn’t help but dwell on his suspicions.

When they got back to the office, Eva took Sam from Joanne and kissed the little boy’s infinitely soft cheek. Joanne smiled at the show of maternal affection but looked coy as she gave a nod to Dan and Jess. The weight of their shared past lingered in her eyes. Some of the old past hurts lingered, but with the pressure on, there had been no chance to talk when Joanne had first arrived.
